Have you ever been moved by a knife?

In Seki, over 800 years of blade-making tradition live on in the hands of skilled craftsmen. Every blade carries their history and pride. HIKA SUMINAMI brings 800 years of craftsmanship into the hands of a new generation.

WHAT SUMINAMI

SUMINAMI /墨波
"Sumi" means ink.
"Nami" means wave.
WHAT SUMINAMI
When the blade catches the light,
its 67 layers of steel reveal a quiet depth, like ink spreading across the surface of water.
Deep, shadowed tones. Silver highlights. Layered patterns that rise like ripples.
Because every blade reveals a slightly different expression, no two are exactly alike. This is a knife with a character of its own - made to become yours.

WHY SUMINAMI

The Japanese sensibility of ink
We did not set out to make only a sharp tool.
We wanted the blade itself to carry a sense of stillness, discipline, and beauty - qualities shaped over centuries in Japanese craftsmanship.
WHY SUMINAMI
The blade reflects the quiet resolve of the samurai. Through 67 layers of forged steel, SUMINAMI captures the soul of Seki swordsmiths — where discipline meets art. It is not merely a tool, but an expression of Japanese spirit, honor, and devotion. Each cut carries the focus of a warrior, transforming daily cooking into a ritual of respect, mindfulness, and timeless elegance.

Knife Crafted In SEKI

Seki City, Gifu — the legendary home of Japanese blademaking. For generations, craftsmen have preserved the spirit of the swordsmith, with Kasuga Shrine at the heart of their tradition. That same uncompromising spirit lives on today, brought to life in every SUMINAMI blade.

Washi Crafted In MINO

Mino has long carried forward the craft of washi papermaking through pure water and human hands. Even in an age of mass-produced paper, Mino's artisans continue to preserve the beauty of each sheet's fibers and the warmth of handwork.

Cedar Case Crafted In TAJIMI

Tajimi has nurtured a culture of making, including the heritage of Mino ware ceramics, and has passed down a refined sense of craft andbeauty . Even as the tools of daily life have changed, Tajimi's craftsmen  continue to read thecharacter of each material and create boxes that protect what matters.

SANADA BRAID

Sanada braid is one of Japan's oldest woven cords. Because the warp and weft threads are tightly woven together, it is exceptionally strong, resistant to stretching, and highly durable. In the past, Sanada braid was used to tie paulownia boxes for storing swords and as sageo cords for securing swords at the waist.

CONNECT CARRY for the users

Made to Grow With You.
SUMINAMI is made to deepen your attachment over time. The ripple-like beauty of the blade, the secure feeling in the hand, and the relationship that develops through everyday cooking all become part of the experience. It is a knife you will want to keep close, use often, and care for over many years. The day it arrives - you first feel its sharpness and balance in your hand.

Sharpness, Durability, and Ease of Resharpening

A Balance Made for Everyday Use
The blade of SUMINAMI is made with AUS10 steel and hardened to around HRC 60. It is designed to maintain a sharp cutting edge while offering resistance to chipping and ease of resharpening. SUMINAMI is not a knife made simply to be displayed. It is a knife made to be used for years to come.

A design that sinks like ink and rises like waves

On the surface of the SUMINAMI blade, deep shadows appear as the angle of light changes.
Areas that look dark, areas that reflect a silvery glow, and layered patterns that rise like waves - together, these contrasts create the world expressed in the name SUMINAMI.

Octagonal Handle

A Shape That Fits the Hand and Helps You Cut Straight
SUMINAMI features a traditional octagonal handle that lets your fingertips naturally sense the blade’s direction. Its faceted shape also helps prevent slipping or rotation, even with wet hands — giving you greater control with every cut.
